Disciplinary Literacy

Every subject has its own ways of reading, writing and thinking. Disciplinary literacy teaches those explicitly, so students can read and write like historians, scientists and geographers rather than being left to work it out for themselves.

Project

This website is about the Disciplinary Literacy & British Academic Written English Secondary School (BAWESS) Corpus project.

BAWESS is building a corpus of authentic written work by secondary school students, so that teachers and researchers can see how academic language is actually used across subjects at GCSE and A level — and teach it explicitly. A corpus is a collection of authentic texts gathered to show how a variety of language is naturally used; genres are the categories of text, shaped by audience and purpose, that students are asked to produce.

The project is run by researchers at the University of Bath, working with teachers in secondary schools across the UK. The project team are in the process of putting the website together to make it as useful for teachers and learners as possible.
